Harlem’s rap renaissance man A$AP Rocky’s worn multiple hats during his brief time in entertainment, tapping into acting, directing, modeling and more besides just rapping. For his new short film titled “Money Man,” he combines several of these talents — including co-director credits alongside Dexter Navy — into one piece of work that’s every bit dark and sinister as it is entertaining.
The film borrows its title from the song, featuring A$AP Nast, of the same name from the A$AP Mob’s Cozy Tapes Vol. 1. The project’s been in gestation for some time since the man behind it, A$AP Yams, passed away suddenly in 2015. Flacko picked up the baton to guide its completion and it’s apparently done now, which partly explains the rollout of the new clip.
The twelve minute visual is a journey to the darkside that follows the main characters, Rocky and the female lead named Rina, as they try to navigate a hyper violent, drug addled world filled with pushers and users. It’s all set to the title track and a second song, “Put That on My Set,” by UK heavyweight Skepta. Even though the scenes depicted are graphic, showing “Money Man” to school children might be the best way to deter them from ever venturing over to the wrong side of the tracks.
