Dej Loaf Breaks Down Money And Power On Introspective New Track ‘Beef N Broccoli’

Earlier this month Dej Loaf came back fierce and poisonous on “Snakes,” but she’s back now with an introspective, fiery take on how life changes when you get famous that’s playfully titled “Beef N Broccoli.”

Of course, another huge song that references this leafy green vegetable has been making the rounds this summer, Lil Yachty and D.R.A.M.’s “Broccoli,” but despite the name similarity the two songs don’t have any interplay. “How you want beef when you ain’t go no broccoli?” she asks, and the clear analogy here seems to be people without any money, power or success coming at her for no reason.

The song is soft and sinuous too, and Dej opens up to let loose her frustrations over the slow-building beat and whispery melody. The lowkey production is a great foil for how raw the lyrics get here — “Sometimes I want to jeopardize it all / But I know they want to see me fall,” she raps. Later, she talks about using alcohol to help escape the pressure of her rising status and the frustrating fakeness of the music industry. Been there.

While the release doesn’t include any official info about her debut album — the follow up to her …And See That’s the Thing EP — it does come with a note that the record is approaching: “As We Get Closer to Her Debut Album.” Listen above.
