There is nothing more hip-hop than a good, old fashioned pool party video. Everybody has had them from Tupac, Biggie, Jay Z, Nas all the way to newer acts like Drake and even Kendrick Lamar shot a pool party video for “The Recipe” that never was released. It’s a rap rite of passage and now Migos have their pool party video with Gucci Mane for the Culture track “Slippery.”
It’s a cookie cutter video for what is mostly a cookie cutter song about the stuff that apparently drives Miley Cyrus crazy these day: opulence, women, more opulence and more women. Migos and Guwop make it fun though, over a hypnotic Deko and OG Parker production and the video is split into four different boisterous and luxurious scenes for each rapper.
Quavo has the privilege of the pool party, Offset spends his time on a swanky balcony, Gucci with a plush Rolls Royce and Takeoff in a lavish bathroom while his lady friend showers. It’s such an elegant affair, Diddy pops up, not really for the video but seemingly for the party. It’s yet another example of him living his “Grand Theft Auto life” as he arrives on a boat to the posh Miami home where everything seems to be going down at.
Come to think of it, that might be another rap rite of passage: Shoot a video so lit, Diddy pops up just to chill. Check that one off for Migos as well.
