Spike Lee has been one of Tyler Perry’s biggest critics, calling his work, “Coonery Buffoonery.” You can see Spike Lee’s comments below, whose side are you on?
damnn Tyler went in!! lls..but he has a point black ppl always find a way to hate on another black person work..ughhh #imjustsayin

One side is claiming inner race hate, the other side feels the image of their race is fragile.
I’ll tell you this both sides are correct the actual part that matters ? How the end user perceives it.
Remember things are to you what you believe and that is 100% dependent on the person.
Shouldn’t matter if it’s black or white. If I’m black & you make movies glorying/exploiting our race or just make horrible films in general, why the fuck should I support you?
I usually support Tyler Perry’s movies like daddy’s little girls and why did I get married but I can’t get with this madea nonsense I’m riding with spike on that one that shit is pure buffoonery.
Well Tyler definitely has a damn good point there. Its only black people that hate on their own race. Italians loved the Sopranos (though they hate Jersey Shore). etc. etc.
I don’t find the Madea movies to be offensive to the black race/culture/diaspora. Tyler has found a core audience who eats his shit up, so why would he deviate from it??
Im rolling with spike!! tyler perry has the money and platform to make movies to educate us not make us live up to the sterotype’s. I wont hate he has a message usually through his films but it feels like he has to make us look a certain way to get his point across. Atleast spike made a variety of movies that showed black people as more than one way. Clockers, Malcolm X, Do the right thing, mo betta blues, crooklyn etc. People black balled spike when he wanted to make malcolm x but madea stay coming out every month smh
when i heard this the 1st time without seeing it i thought tyler perry was in character like dressed in drag as madea. he shouldnt speak like her when he isnt dressed like her, he should come out the closet.
his movies and tv shows are buffonery to me, thats my opinion. he does make decent films also but his bread and butter is that madea shit and its not my type of flick sorry
Personally, I dont like the Madea stuff, Meet The Browns, etc. They’re just corny to me. Perrys other movies though like Why Did I Get Married are entertaining. I have an issue with the accusations of coonery and bufoonery though. The best I can explain it is, there is no way a white person can be accused of these things. MEaning it seems to me ONLY vlack people can be accused of coonery. Is that right? It seems some of the same comedy that maybe the Wayans Brothers do has been accused of that, but Jim Carrey does similar things and he’s labeled a comedic genius. You never here the terms coonery, sell-out, or whatever from white people as it pertains to white people. Why is it that only blacks can be accused of this?
Tyler makes his money off of negative sterotypes of black people. Its striaght up coonery. All hes doing is showing white people that we do act like that and we support acting like that. Wayans brothers should not be brought up in this conversation they have done other styles of movies and proved they can act. Everyone of his movies and tv shows are the same. Spike is not hating in my mind. Black people have to be more creative
TYLER PERRY’S MOVIE ARE LIKE MINSTREL SHOWS… THE ONLY BLACK PEPLETHAT LIKE THEM ARE IGNORANT SOUTHERN BLACK PEOPLE. SPIKE LEE IS SO RIGHT….
fuck spike lee hating ass spike lee just mad cuz a new director movie star like tyler perry has came in the game and done blew up probably bigger than him once again its only us black folks that be hating on each other when will the hating stop? smfh
Tyler Perry movies always have a message. Don’t act like some of us don’t know people that act like madea. Truth is some of us do act like that. More than that though the movies are entertaining Tyler Perry knows how to make good movies with all black casts.
Listen man, going back and forth and asking who’s side you’re on is ridiculous. Both of the men have good points, however, I think we as Black people are overly sensitive when it comes to race. None of Tyler Perry’s films display black people negatively. What people are afraid of is that some of the characters in his films accurately depict how SOME black people are. Every one of us has a Mr. Brown in our family, let’s just be real here. Why are we as Black people so obsessed about how white people, or any other race, may view us? Who gives a shit about their opinions. You’re giving them too much power by still letting this bother you. Personally, I appreciate both Tyler Perry’s and Spike Lee’s work. I think we need that balance. I’m certainly all for a good laugh, but I need to balance that something conscious!
But Spike Lee criticizing Tyler Perry is like the pot calling the kettle black. He does the same things in his movies. Let’s take Do the Right Thing for example. He was clearly trying to get a point across in that movie about race relations, but in doing so, he used the foul mouthed, loud ass, stereotypical black man (and woman) to reach his point. So stop criticizing, make movies and let’s all just get along.
I dont think his movies are offensive but I do think they kinda suck. People don’t go see Tyler perry movies because the jokes are the best or because the plot is better than the plot in other movies. People go see his movies because of the religious angle he puts in them. He’s movies are not the worst but far from the best. I think he is a much better hustler than he is a movie maker. He’s found a way to dominate the family/religious/PG type market without putting together the best movies. I am not a huge spike lee fan but he is hands down the better movie maker but Tyler perry is a much better hustler. He has a choke hold on the wallets of black/religious America….
I agree with both of them. Our race is fragile and we do have a crab in a barrel syndrome and Perry’s movies are a bunch of coonery buffonery. His movies portray basic stereotypes and recycles the same plot (Women gets done wrong, women finds new light skin guy to love, first man’s life crumbles, and Tyler Perry runs around in a dress acting like a coon).
Perry does NOT make a good point. All those examples he used were great intellects and phenomenal pieces of work. Is he saying Madea is up there with Hughes and the like? I sure hope he isn’t. I’m tired of this “hater” interpretation everyone has adopted. So, I can’t not like Perry because I’m Black? I can’t call it buffoonery? It IS buffoonery. Spike is 100% correct. How dare Perry compare himself to Hughes or Hurston. What an asshole.
wow the W.E.B. and Booker T Washington comparison & Langston Hughes was on point.. Blacks have done this through out history. It never ends
