Even the biggest directors in the world become fanfiction writers when it comes to Star Wars. They just have a higher probability of seeing their idea brought to life than the average fan.
For example, Guillermo del Toro has a great idea for a Star Wars Anthology movie starring Jabba the Hutt. During a Comic-Con interview with Yahoo!, del Toro opened up about his Star Wars dream.
I would do the sort of Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control. One, because it”s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup. I just love the character.
In order to head off the rumor mill, the “Hellboy” director was quick to add this idea is not real, but just him geeking out. But come on Lucasfilm, this is a GREAT idea.
Nearly every piece of current lore in the Star Wars universe deals with the ongoing struggle between the Republic and the Empire. But the Hutt Cartel is a HUGE third lane that keeps the wheels of war greased. Without the planets of Nal Hutta and Nar Shaddaa, who would equip both sides with weapons? Who would keep the smugglers in business and the Outer Rim economy viable? Surely power of that magnitude – where the two most powerful factions in the galaxy turn to you in times of desperation – would give rise to a byzantine internal political landscape.
Hutts live a very long time. When we first see Jabba in “The Phantom Menace,” he is already in possession of power. Over half a decade later, he looks little worse for wear. But how did Jabba maintain his status on the Grand Hutt Council? What kind of Machiavellian schemer was he to not only rise to power, but keep it in his grasp until his miscalculation of Princess Leia”s mettle?
