Benedict Cumberbatch makes us feel better about this ‘Grinch’ remake

The Cumberbitches of the world surely all think of their idol, Benedict Cumberbatch, as an exceedingly charming and cuddly guy. But come Christmas 2017, we”ll get to see the English actor become as cuddly as a cactus and as charming as an eel.

Cumberbatch will voice the Grinch in the upcoming 3D animated feature film adaptation of Dr. Seuss” How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The film is being made by Illumination Entertainment, which also gave us the Despicable Me movies. The casting announcement came at Universal”s CinemaCon presentation today.

The news a few years back that Hollywood would be churning out yet another Grinch movie had all of us with remake fatigue groaning, “Bah humbug.” (You can”t beat the 1966 animated TV special.) But the news that the uniquely alluring deep voice of the dragon Smaug will be our Grinch might make this one worth looking forward to.

At the CinemaCon presentation, Universal also announced that South Park co-creator Trey Parker will voice the villain in Despicable Me 3.

Illumination Entertainment”s How the Grinch Stole Christmas will open in theaters on November 10, 2017.
