It's attack of the sequels this Father's Day weekend at the box office, as both Sony's “22 Jump Street” and DreamWorks Animation's “How to Train Your Dragon 2” are off to solid beginnings.
“Jump,” reuniting stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, took the top spot on Friday, earning $25 million. The remake sequel should pick up in excess of $60 million for the weekend.
That puts it far ahead of the first film, which debuted to $36 million in March, 2012.
Meanwhile, “Dragon 2” flew to second place after picking up $18.5 million. The animated sequel is aiming for a $53 million debut this weekend. The first “Dragon” opened over four years ago to the tune of $43.7 million.
It features the voices of Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera and, once again, Jonah Hill.
Last week's No. 1 film, the weepy YA drama “Fault in Our Stars,” pulled in another $6.3 million.
The film, which cost just $12 million to produce, has so far earned $72.3 million domestically. It stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort.
Disney's “Maleficent,” featuring Angelina Jolie in the title role, conjured up $5.8 million for fourth place, brining its domestic total to a magical $150.3 million.
The critically acclaimed Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt sci-fi film “Edge of Tomorrow” continues to struggle at the box office. It fought its way to $4.5 million on Friday, raising its North American total to just $45 million.
Lower on the chart, holdovers “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and “Godzilla” should be crossing the $200 million mark soon, while “Amazing Spider-Man 2” may stop just short of it.
