Powered by the mid-week holiday, the long-awaited Sony reboot “The Amazing Spider-Man” is off to a solid, but not-record breaking, start.
On the Fourth of July holiday, Spidey swung to an impressive $23.4 million, bringing its domestic box office total to $59.3 million in its first two days (including midnight showings on Monday). It broke the all-time record for a Tuesday opener with $35 million on its opening day.
The holiday number is significantly lower, however, than the $29.1 million that the first “Transformers” film was able to rack up back in 2007. It remains the biggest July 4 ever.
Although “Amazing” actually dropped 35% from opening day, it’s still on track to earn between $125 million to $140 million over the extended, six-day weekend.
The reboot of the Marvel hero stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans and others, and was directed by Marc Webb (“500 Days of Summer”). A sequel is already in the works.
Looking back at the previous incarnation of “Spider-Man” (with Sam Raimi directing Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker), “Spider-Man 2” earned $22.1 million on July 4, 2004 (its fifth day of release), and that was without the benefit of costly 3-D prices.
Meanwhile, “Katy Perry: Part of Me” opens today, while Oliver Stone’s “Savages” debuts Friday.
