“Ted” and “Magic Mike” received some stiff competition at the local multiplex Tuesday as Sony Pictures unleashed Marc Webb’s “Amazing Spider-Man.” After pulling in $7.5 million in midnight screenings, the Wall-Crawler reboot grossed an impressive $35 million in 4,318 theaters. That breaks the largest opening ever for a Tuesday. The previous record holder was the $27.8 million collected by “Transformers” in 2007. Like “Amazing,” Michael Bay’s inaugural robot vs. robot spectacle also debuted on July 3.
Compared to other “Spider-Man” films, however, the results weren’t as impressive. It’s been a little over five years since “Spider-Man 3” debuted, on a Friday, to $59.8 million. “Spider-Man 2” opened on Wednesday, June 30, 2004 to $40.4 million. Moreover, Sam Raimi’s first “Spider-Man” grossed $39.2 million on Friday, May 3, 2002, just over a decade ago with substantially lower ticket prices. So, compared to the other “Spider-Man” films it’s solid, but not spectacular. Sony will hope “Amazing” makes its mark over the six-day frame ending Sunday. For comparison’s sake, “The Hunger Games” amassed $181 million over its first six days this past March. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Pt. 1” found $171.4 million. The first “Transformers” grossed $146 million. “Spider-Man,” “Spider-Man 2” and “Spider-Man 3” found $144 million, $180 million and $176.1 million respectively over that span. The studio reportedly is hoping for between $120-130 million for “Amazing.”
