Box office: ‘Dracula’ tops ‘Gone Girl’ in close Friday race

It's another close race at the box office this weekend, as newcomer “Dracula Untold” narrowly beat holdover “Gone Girl” on Friday, although “Girl” will likely win the weekend.

“Dracula,” starring Luke Evans as the infamous vampire, scared up a strong $8.9 million on Friday, while “Girl” made off with $8.1 million.

David Fincher's “Gone Girl,” starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, should win the weekend with around $26 million, while “Untold” will likely debut to $23 million or so.

“Annabelle,” the horror film spun off from “The Conjuring,” and Disney's new family film “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” were neck-and-neck on Friday.

Both films earned an estimated $5.2 million, with “Alexander” aiming for a debut weekend haul of $18 million or so. It stars Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner.

The legal drama “The Judge,” pairing Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, rounded out the top five with a soft opening of $4.4 million. Costing an estimated $50 to produce, the film is receiving mixed reviews and will likely pick up around $14 million for the weekend.
