Marvel's mightiest warriors continued their stellar run Friday as “Avengers: Age of Ultron” continued to dominate the box office. Joss Whedon's last go around with the iconic super team pulled in another $21.3 million for an incredible $256.9 million in just eight days. The Walt Disney Studios release should cross the $300 million mark by Sunday and is now at a staggering $716.4 million worldwide in under two weeks. It could hit $1 billion before next weekend.
Failing to take a bite out of the “Avengers” was Warner Bros.' “Hot Pursuit.” The counter programming comedy starring Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon made $4.2 million on its opening day for what should be a $12-13 million weekend. That would be an OK start considering the film's reported $35 million budget, but the long term prospects don't look strong for this one. “Hot Pursuit” earned a terrible C+ Cinemascore and reviews have been abysmal. Obviously, that's not a great combination for good word of mouth.
Dropping to no. 3 was Lionsgate's “Age of Adaline.” The Blake Lively fantasy took in $1.5 million and has earned $27.4 million so far.
“Furious 7's” incredible run has slowed down considerably, but the Universal Pictures blockbuster still earned $1.4 million on Friday for a current domestic tally of $334.5 million.
“Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” continues to do whatever its doing at no. 5 as it pulled in another $1.2 million and its U.S. gross reached $54.1 million.
IFC Film's “The D Train” effectively bombed in its attempt to launch wide on 1,009 screens. The Sundance comedy earned just $160,000 or $159 per screen.
