Brie Larson is Captain Marvel, Danai Gurira joins ‘Black Panther’

It feels as if we waited forever for Marvel Entertainment to greenlight their first female-led superhero film and it's felt just as long for them to announce who would be playing Captain Marvel (a.k.a. Carol Danvers). They've finally made the big announcement at San Diego Comic-Con. Captain Marvel is Brie Larson. And, surprise! Danai Gurira joins Black Panther.

March 8, 2019. That's when we'll see Marvel Entertainment's Captain Marvel and it'll star Oscar-winner Brie Larson in the lead role. She was previously rumored as having the coveted role but Marvel made it official in their Hall H panel at Comic-Con tonight.

No stranger to comic book adaptations, having starred in 2010's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Larson will next be seen in Kong: Skull Island opposite Marvel star Tom Hiddleston.

We previously reported on not one but TWO female directors in the running to captain the Captain Marvel ship – Niki Caro and Jennifer Kent – though I'd also heard Emily Carmichael was in the running as well. Marvel did not announce a director for the film tonight.

Tonight at SDCC Marvel also announced The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira joining the cast of Black Panther as the leader of the Dora Milaje (which is the best thing ever, if I do say so myself) and announced the previously cast Michael B. Jordan is playing villain Erik Killmonger in that film.

They panel also spoke on Thor: Ragnarok, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and more. We'll have more on all of those soon in our continuing Comic-Con coverage.
