LOS ANGELES – Cary Joji Fukunaga took home an Emmy last night for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for his work on “True Detective.” On stage holding the award, he seemed less than ready for the moment. However, he was far more eloquent chatting with HitFix's Chris Eggertsen on the red carpet earlier in the day.
In fact, on the carpet Fukunaga admitted that he didn't have a speech prepared. Instead, he said, he had “a list of names. It's going to be the most boring thing ever if I do accept an award.” It wasn't that, but it wasn't a prepared speech either.
“I can't really imagine a better first foray into television,” Fukunaga said at the start of the red carpet chat. He continued, noting his pleasure with the ratings and the critical response and then ending up at the Emmys, “What more could you ask for? Maybe wins. Wins is the next thing you ask for. But, you know…”
To be clear, the comment about wins wasn't offered in a “we're due” sort of a way. Fukunaga was speaking in an honest manner, saying that obviously they would want to win having been nominated (who wouldn't). That wish came true, even if it was the only award “True Detective” won last night (it did take home awards at the Creative Arts ceremony as well).
