Chris Pine is back as Captain Kirk in the upcoming “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
The star discussed the film at CinemaCon 2013 in Las Vegas this weekend. Check out the video interview above, in which Pine discusses what it means to be a true leader in J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi sequel.
“Into Darknes” finds Kirk facing new challenges and growing a s a character and a captain. Pine explains that the sequel “is really about him earning the chair and learning what it means to be a true captain and leader of men. And, for Kirk, that has a lot to do with humility and realizing and understanding his faults as well as his strengths.”
Kirk and his trusted enterprise crew will be facing a powerful new villain, played by “Sherlock” star Benedict Cumberbatch. “Our bad guy John Harrison brings him to his knees and Kirk realizes how fragile his life is.”
Pine goes on to state that Abrams designed the film for the big 3D, IMAX experience — including a cool-sounding scene in which people are “flying through space and trying to dodge asteroids” — without losing the film’s humanity.
The film also stars Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Alice Eve, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, and others.
“Star Trek Into Darkness” opens in the U.S. May 17.
