‘David Brent: Life on the Road’: Teaser trailer redefines musical comedy

David Brent is back and more awkward than ever.

The paper company exec that Ricky Gervais made famous in the BBC series The Office is heading out to live his dream as a rock star in the upcoming movie David Brent: Life on the Road. And now we have a first look at what this life will be like in a newly-released teaser trailer.

In the video, Brent sings one of his tunes which has all the subtlety of Def Leppard”s “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” but none of the catchy hooks. It”s followed by confused, slightly annoyed glances from his audience – those filling up the cubicle farm.

As for the movie itself, when Brent heads out on tour, everything will be documented. But it”s not quite as it seems. In a 2014 press release, the BBC said, “[Brent] thinks it'll be like Scorsese filming The Rolling Stones, but it turns out to be a 'where are they now' documentary. He has to take a few weeks off work and cash in a couple of pensions, because the session musicians in the band are costing him more than he's getting in ticket sales.”

While the songs might be awful, it”s not for lack of trying. Gervais brought on Coldplay's Chris Martin to help on the soundtrack.

David Brent: Life on the Road is set for an August 19 release.
