‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ will steam up theaters starting August 1, 2014

Moviegoers now have a date with “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Universal Pictures and Focus Features picked up the rights in March 2012. It seemed like a bit of a long shot when they first announced their goal of releasing the film by next summer, but they are keeping to their word.

The highly-anticipated adaptation will open in North America on Friday, August 1, 2014, with international release dates to be announced.

“Nowhere Boy” helmer Sam Taylor-Johnson recently signed on to direct the film, but there have been no casting announcements as of yet. Kelly Marcel wrote the screenplay, while James, Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti will produce.

The book is the first in a trilogy by E.L. James centers on an S&M relationship between 27-year-old billionaire Christian Grey and college student Anastasia Steele. It was followed by “Fifty Shades Darker” and “Fifty Shades Freed.”

The “Shades” trilogy has sold over 70 million copies worldwide.
