First Look! CBS’s Supergirl totally stole her costume from Superman’s leftovers

CBS is gearing up to throw their hat in the superhero ring with “Supergirl.” The main cast is shaping up nicely, and now Warner Bros. has unveiled the new look for Kara Danvers iconic Supergirl costume.

The costume for designed by three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood. Atwood also designed the costumes for The CW shows “The Flash” and “Arrow.”

According to Atwood, “In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today.”

For the most part, little has changed. But as they say, the devil is in the details. Kara”s costume appears to be created from the same kind of material Superman donned in “Man of Steel.”* The mesh of the costume implies something stronger than mere cloth, some type of modern day chainmail or armor, perhaps? Where a twenty-something chick gets such a thing is (currently) a mystery.

*If the material is rare, perhaps Kara used the last of the red for her skirt, hence why Clark had to forgo his signature underwear. Headcanon accepted!

There is reinforced stitching throughout the top and leggings to help with any upskirt moments. But is Supergirl still wearing heels? The promo image is too dark to see, but with the power of color correction, perhaps we can shed some light on the subject.

To my eyes, those look like wedges or tiny booted heels. Well, you can”t win ’em all. And to be fair, when you can fly, proper cardiovascular footwear can take a back seat.

The official synopsis for “Supergirl” from CBS:

Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she”s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was destined to be.

Production begins this week on the pilot episode for “Supergirl.”
