In red band ‘Spy’ trailer, Melissa McCarthy plays the same character she always is

Next summer, Melissa McCarthy returns to comedy with her spy movie, aptly titled “Spy.” In the red band trailer above, her character Susan Cooper is dealing with malaise as an under appreciated CIA analyst.

From 20th Century Fox:

Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency”s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster.

This will be McCarthy”s third team up with director Paul Feig. She previously worked with him on “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat.” And something of a pattern is starting to emerge. Is McCarthy choosing to play variations of the same bumbling, downtrodden comic relief in every film? Or is this a classic case of type-casting?

Directed and written by Paul Feig, “Spy” stars Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Bobby Cannavale, Allison Janney, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Miranda Hart, and Jude Law.

Fox's press release has “Spy” hitting theaters on May 22, 2015 instead of the ambiguous “June” from the trailer.
