‘Madea’s’ Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox cross paths in new ‘Alex Cross’ trailer

“Madea” multi-hyphenate Tyler Perry is trading in his dress for a gun and a badge in the upcoming “Alex Cross.” The film’s trailer debuted today.

Based on James Patterson’s bestselling series, “Cross” finds the title detective (Perry) on the trailer of a brutal killer nicknamed Picasso, played by “Lost” nice guy Matthew Fox (this dude looks like he’s been working out…a lot).

The Cross character was previously played by Morgan Freeman in “Kiss the Girls” and “Along Came a Spider.” Perry has appeared in other directors’ films before (notably J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot), but this finds him in a whole new mode of action hero. Can he pull it off? Despite overly familiar genre tropes and some hilariously melodramatic dialogue (and why does Fox have a bazooka?), “Cross” still looks to be an effective little thriller.

Directed by Rob Cohen (“The Fast and the Furious”), “Cross” also stars Ed Burns, John C. McGinley, Jean Reno, and Cicely Tyson.

Perry can currently be seen in his latest Madea film, “Madea’s Witness Protection.”

“Alex Cross” will be released October 19.

What do you think of the trailer? Will Perry convince as Alex Cross?
