Monday Ratings: ‘Whispers’ premieres well as ‘American Ninja Warrior’ tops ‘Bachelorette’

The series premiere of “The Whispers” held well from its “The Bachelorette” lead-in to top NBC's “The Island” and give ABC Monday wins both overall and in the key demographic.

ABC needed that “Whispers” triumph to take the night because, for the second straight week, “American Ninja Warrior” was able to beat “The Bachelorette” head-to-head over the first two hours of primetime. With only a 0.1 key demo rating dip in its second half-hour, ABC has to be pleased with the premiere.

The night's other premiere was FOX's “So You Think You Can Dance,” down 20 percent from last year's return.

Let's get to the numbers…

Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged a 1.8 rating for Monday night, edging out NBC's 1.7 rating in the key demographic. FOX was third with a 1.2 key demo rating, followed by CBS' 1.0 key demo rating. And The CW averaged a 0.2 key demo rating for Monday night.

Overall, ABC averaged an estimated 6.22 million viewers and a 4.2 rating/7 share for Monday night. CBS was a close second with 6.1 million viewers and a 4.0/7, with ABC's 5.77 million viewers and 3.3/6 right behind. FOX averaged 3.93 million viewers and a 2.5/4 for the night, handily beating the 586,000 viewers and 0.4/1 for The CW.

8 p.m. – ABC's “The Bachelorette” started primetime in first with 6.51 million viewers, edging out the 6.43 million viewers for NBC's “American Ninja Warrior,” while both shows averaged a 1.8 rating among adults 18-49. CBS' repeats of “2 Broke Girls” and “Mike & Molly” averaged 5.95 million viewers and a 1.2 key demo rating, compared to the 4.06 million viewers and 1.3 key demo rating for the first hour of the “So You Think You Can Dance” season. On The CW, a “The Originals” encore averaged 618,000 viewers and a 0.2 key demo rating.

9 p.m. – “American Ninja Warrior” rose to 7.12 million viewers and a 2.2 rating among adults 18-49 to put NBC in first for the 9 p.m. hour. ABC's “The Bachelorette” was second with 6.4 million viewers and a 1.9 key demo rating. CBS' “Scorpion” averaged 5.795 million viewers and a 1.0 key demo rating, again splitting with the 3.8 million viewers and 1.2 key demo rating for FOX's “So You Think You Can Dance.” “Jane the Virgin” drew 554,000 viewers and a 0.2 key demo rating to The CW for a repeat.

10 p.m. – CBS moved into first overall in the 10 p.m. hour with 6.57 million viewers for a repeat of “NCIS: Los Angeles,” which finished third with a 0.9 rating among adults 18-49. ABC's premiere for “The Whispers” averaged 5.745 million viewers for second and won the hour with a 1.5 key demo rating. NBC's “The Island” averaged 3.76 million viewers and a 1.2 key demo rating, in line with last week's premiere.
