Fox pretty much sat the Oscar season out last year after coming off a big 2012-2013 season with Ang Lee's “Life of Pi.” This year, they have a David Fincher film to peddle, and indeed, “Gone Girl” could be an intriguing zeitgeist play dealing in elements of misogyny and misandry and the overall war of the sexes just four years after the director tapped an au courant vein with his critically acclaimed “Social Network.” The latest trailer for the film (teased over the weekend by the studio on a key date) sets the stage nicely.
Ben Affleck stars as Nick Dunne, the prime murder suspect in the disappearance of his wife, Amy. It was a fascinating choice to cast Affleck, who has maintained an interest in front of the camera despite being an Oscar-winning filmmaker behind it. And Rosamund Pike has a very meaty opportunity in the role of Amy. One person who has seen a good portion of the film told me the actress is “unrecognizable” in the role, and given where the narrative of this one goes, it's not a shocking proposition.
Certainly the trailer (which is driven by Pike's narration) proves as ever that Fincher's eye for an image is impeccable. Working again in the digital realm with cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth, he presents a striking canvas, while two-time Oscar-winning editor Kirk Baxter (“The Social Network,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”) gets to piece it all together. Fincher also tapped Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for music duties again, so the gang's all back together.
