Selena Gomez and Ethan Hawke on the sad Shelby Super Snake of ‘Getaway’

Selena Gomez is “not the best driver.”  So said the actress when we sat down with her and co-star Ethan Hawke to discuss their new movie, “Getaway.” The action-thriller takes place almost entirely in a car, but Gomez didn’t even have to pretend to be a good driver for her role as The Kid, it’s Hawke’s character, Brent Magna, who is behind the wheel the whole time.
Gomez and Hawke aren’t the only stars of the film, the Shelby GT500 Super Snake is featured nearly as much as the living members of the cast (which also includes Jon Voight), maybe more. Because it is on screen so much, audience members might grow attached to the vehicle, however Hawke told us that neither he nor Gomez were able to grow close to the Super Snake as in reality more than one car was used.
Lest you think us slightly odd for anthropomorphizing the vehicle, Hawke also said that watching the movie later he did get a sense that sometimes “the car looks sad.” If cars had feelings, this one being sad would be completely natural as the poor thing gets beaten up pretty badly.
As you might expect, a movie that is a big long car chase features a whole lot of stunts. Neither Gomez nor Hawke seemed to have been scared for themselves, they were, however, a little worried for the stuntmen. This lack of fear wasn’t false bravado, some of it was definitely due to their not being on set for every stunt. Said Gomez, “Luckily we weren’t there for a lot of the flipping and things, cause that would have definitely scared me.”
You will have to see for yourself if you get scared for the car or the people in it. Directed by Courtney Solomon, “Getaway” races into theaters August 30th.
