‘Smash’s’ Katharine McPhee lands female lead in CBS genius drama ‘Scorpion’

Katharine McPhee is taking another stab at series television.

The “Smash” alum has signed on for the female lead in CBS's Scorpion,” a drama pilot centering on an “eccentric genius” named Walter (Elyes Gabel) who leads an “international network of super-geniuses” who represent mankind's last line of defense against the terrors of the modern world. McPhee will play Paige, a “working-class hero” and waitress who has the unique ability to understand geniuses and becomes a caretaker/translator for Walter's offbeat cohorts.

The pilot, which is based on the life of child prodigy and Scorpion Computer Services founder Walter O'Brien, will be written by Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton (“Golden Boy”) and directed by “Fast and Furious” helmer Justin Lin, who's also executive-producing the project alongside Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (“Fringe,” “Sleepy Hollow”).

McPhee starred as Broadway ingenue Karen Cartwright on “Smash” for two seasons.
