It’s been a particularly Marvel-heavy last week, what with the new trailer for Captain Marvel, the first trailer (and new title) for Avengers: Endgame, plus the de-embargoed and overwhelming positive reviews (plus some critics’ circle awards) for Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. So hopefully you’re not too Marveled out for this news: We now know the general plot to Spider-Man: Far from Home.
That may be a touch confusing, so a quick reminder: Far from Home is the non-animated, live-action one following the third Peter Parker in a decade-and-a-half, and not the animated, Miles Morales-led Into the Spider-Verse, which comes out next weekend. Far from Home was one of the biggies at the CCXP comic con in Brazil this weekend, and lead actor Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal — who re-confirmed that he’s playing villain Mysterio a few days back, in case you went a minute without thinking of comic book movies — were both surprise guests, as a report from /Film.
There was a trailer, which the rest of the world can’t see just yet, and some plot talk. So here’s what Spider-Man: Far from Home is about: Spidey — who we’re assuming will be coming back from the dead in Avengers: Endgame, which arrives about a month earlier — battles some aliens. They’re called Elementals, and, to defeat them, Nick Fury pairs our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man with Gyllenhaal’s Quentin Beck. Presumably Fury and Parker don’t know Beck is (or is going to become) Mysterio, one of the comics’ prize baddies, so we’re guessing this is going to be one twisty-turny solo outing. Oh, and he does this all while on European vacation, just like in National Lampoon’s European Vacation.
Spider-Man: Far from Home arrives on July 9, 2019, and it brings back Homecoming director Jon Watts, as well as co-stars Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Toni Revolori, previous antagonist Michael Keaton, and — also excitingly — Cobie Smulders’ S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill, who sat a bunch of Marvel titles out after Avengers: Age of Ultron only to get whacked in Avengers: Infinity War. Oh, and J.B. Smoove is in it, too, which can only be a good thing.
