With Disney buying out Lucasfilm for some $4 billion, the future of the various “Star Wars” multimedia entities is largely up in the air.
Besides the initial announcement of the upcoming theatrical film “Episode VII,” the fate of ongoing video games, animated spin-offs, the planned live-action series, comic books and more are uncertain.
However, there is some talk about the future of the acclaimed animated TV show “The Clone Wars.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will finish out its current season on the Time Warner-owned Cartoon Network and then likely make a move to its new home on Disney XD.
It’s not known how much longer the show will continue to air (if at all) after that. Meanwhile, Cartoon Network will maintain the video rights to the first five seasons, which could complicate DVD/Blu-ray releases.
“Star Wars: The Clone Wars” takes place between episodes 2 and 3, and details the ongoing clash between the clone army and the separatists, with special attention paid to Obi-Wan Kenobi and the brash, increasingly dark Anakin Skywalker.
