William Peter Blatty’s “The Exorcist” is heading for a new interpretation.
The best-selling 1971 novel is being developed as a 10-episode miniseries by “Martha Marcy May Marlene” writer/director Sean Durkin, according to Vulture. Morgan Creek Productions is backing the project alongside Roy Lee, the producer behind such horror films as “The Ring,” “Quarantine” and “The Strangers.” The team is expected to begin shopping the project to networks in the next couple of weeks.
Given the longer format, Durkin’s version will devote much more time to the lead-up to and aftermath of the demonic possession and exorcism.
Durkin won the Directing Award (Drama) at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival for “Martha Marcy,” which stars Elizabeth Olsen as a young woman who undergoes a mental breakdown after escaping from an abusive cult.
