Was Stephen Fry right to flee Twitter?

Comedian Stephen Fry hosted the BAFTA awards this weekend and after referring to costume designer Jenny Beaver as a “bag lady” was immediately subject to a storm of Twitter rage.

Whether the outcry was founded or not, Fry felt that the response was invasive enough that he almost immediately quit Twitter.

Social media as a hub of current civil discourse is a given right now. Is that a good thing, though?

Did Fry make the right move? Or was there another option to use the backlash as an opportunity to start an actual dialogue?
