Meast and Least for Week 14

If you’ve been following this site for any amount of time, you know I pull video from games and studio shows and put them on YouTube for use on the site. Typically, it’s an amusing little wrinkle like Atari Bigby saying he went to University of Jah, Rastafar High. It’s helpful for grabbing tidbits of media that won’t get attention from conventional outlets.

Well that’s come to an end. At least the YouTube part of it. After a while of being fairly lax about video enforcement for a while, the NFL started to crack down. They put in a bunch of copyright claims and got my YouTube channel shut down or indefinitely suspended, if there’s a practical difference. I can’t say I blame them for it. It’s their property. They can protect it however they see fit. Frankly, I’m surprised it took them as long as it did.

What annoys me is the privileged access that grants for its own video content to a select few. If the NFL is trying to drive people away from using YouTube to watch game highlights, make the clips from universally embeddable. Believe me, I’d be glad to post video that someone else went to the effort to pull and edit rather than do it myself and find a place to host it. won’t let the average person embed their clips. Instead, the site has an arrangement with outlets like Yahoo, USA Today, CBS and SI that give those sites the ability to host video that others can’t. Who knows if these companies pay for this service or it’s an example of the league playing favorites with the bigger media outlets, perhaps with an understanding that privileged access means nicer treatment. I can’t say for sure. Again, it’s their prerogative to implement whatever policy they want. All I know is it sucks.

The Sean Taylor Memorial Meast for Week 14 is David Wilson, who rushed for 100 yards and two touchdowns and also had a 97-yard kick return for a score. The Giants’ first-round pick landed himself in Tom Coughlin’s doghouse with a fumble in Week 1, but a Coughlin’s trademark regiment of starvation and beatings appeared to have sorted him out. At least until Wilson puts another one on the ground, then it’s back in the hole.

Also receiving consideration: Nick Foles, Richard Sherman, Cam Newton, Adrian Peterson

The Jeff George Memorial Least for Week 14 is the Arizona Cardinals, who started this season 4-0 but have now lost nine straight, most recently a 58-0 drubbing at the hands of division rival Seattle. Yet another reason why it’s best not to get swept up in hot starts, even though that’ll never stop us. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disturbed by the few years of respectability that the Cardinals enjoyed with Kurt Warner. It was just so jarring. The thought of the Cardinals as abject failures is so much more a comforting familiarity.
