This Formerly-Homeless Restaurant Owner Is Paying It Forward On Thanksgiving

Good news is hard to come by today. Here’s a little sliver of light — George’s Senate Coney Island in Northville, Mich. is offering free meals to singles and the homeless, according to a picture of a sign posted by user rhymingisfun on Reddit today.

This isn’t the first year he’s done it, the owner of the eponymous Greek restaurant, George, said to WILX10 news in an interview. In the past, dozens of locals have shown up to take him up on the offer. “It makes my heart feel good to do it, and help a little bit.”

His generosity doesn’t come out of nowhere. As a Greek immigrant who came to the U.S. when he was 23, much of his childhood was spent on a farm with seven other brothers and sisters. After leaving home to go to Athens when he was 12, he found himself homeless and relying on the kindness of others for food and shelter.

The Reddit photo has exploded since it was posted online, getting thousands of likes and shares. We’re guessing George is going to have some help covering expenses this year.
