This Cat Holding His Owners’ Hands During His Last Trip To The Vet Will Tug On Your Heartstrings

Having a pet is a double edged sword. While they are wonderful companions and constant cuddlers, the fact is that their moderately short life spans means you are guaranteed heartbreak in a decade or so. Most people consider that risk worth it, and stories like this one are proof as to why.

Andrew Bernhard posted a picture on Reddit of his cat of 15 years, Little Andrew, on their way to the vet for the final time. Bernhard had noticed that Little Andrew’s health had worsened significantly in recent months, leaving him with no humane choice but to put his feline friend to sleep.

“He was by my side for a long time and just had been running out of gas. He wasn’t eating or drinking, stopped purring, and just wasn’t himself. It would’ve been selfish to keep him just because I didn’t want to lose him.”

However, as a final gift to his friend, Little Andrew reached out his paw and held his buddy’s hand for one last time as they headed to the vet. Damn it, who is cutting onions in here?

After the post hit Reddit, many people reached out to Bernhard offer their condolences or share their own pet stories.

Bernhard shared one last comment about Little Andrew, thankful that those tiny paws made an impact on so many people.

“Yep. I’m a big dumb idiot. Even though the cat saw me through high school, undergraduate, medical school, and residency graduations, I just never could figure out what he was thinking. So now that my cat’s story has touched hundreds of thousands of people, I’ll go back to doing surgery and you can go back to trolling the Internet. Strong work.”

Moral of the story: everyone hug your pets extra close tonight.
