Meet The Gardener That Grows 100-Pound Vegetables Like It Ain’t No Thing

Have you ever flipped through an old edition of Guinness Book of World Records and gawked at the occasional big-ass vegetable in-between starring at the world’s longest fingernails guy and photos of the world’s tallest man standing next to assorted things? In the era of Pokemon Go and thrilling advances in pornography, the allure of a giant vegetable isn’t quite as sexy as it once was. So how can enormous vegetables thrill/distract us again? Grow a whole buttload.

Great Big Story has a remarkably charming mini-doc (only running about two-and-a-half minutes) on a Welshman by the name of Phillip Vowles that grows supersized veggies that have been known to weigh in at over 100 pounds. Vowles grows colossal marrows (or zucchini for us North American types) and he notes that even with the swollen size the taste is still the same.

“Big vegetables feed big families,” notes Vowles. He should know. His mother had 17 children.

It’s not just massive marrows that Vowles has a knack for growing. He set the Guinness World Record for the heaviest cucumber and he’s been able to grow a cabbage that weighs more than a good chunk of the UFC’s Flyweight division. Even better? Vowles says if he can do it, anyone can do it. Your apartment’s co-op board might disagree, but it’s nice to get words of encouragement from a vegetable growing champ.

We have Great Big Story‘s look at this gentleman grower located at the top of the page for your viewing pleasure.
