A Group Of Girls Are Honoring A Deceased Friend By Wearing Her Prom Dress To All Their Dances

This week has been incredibly tough when it comes to news of sudden deaths. First, wrestling champion Chyna passed away too young, and then Prince followed her at an equally tragic age leaving many admirers behind. Sometimes on rough days it can be hard to remember the heartwarming things that can come from someone’s passing, but other times life offers up a tale just in time to make everyone feel just a bit better about all the awful things happening in the world.

A touching story from Refinery29 is the thing to make that happen today, but it’s not without its sad points as well. A group of high school girls from outside of Boston are wearing the same dress to all four of their proms. The dress was originally worn by their close friend who passed away from a terminal disease shortly after her own Junior Prom at which she wore the sparkly gown. The full details are as such;

Catherine Malatesta, a high school junior, died last August, less than three months after attending her junior prom in a blue gown. (She had first told her mom about the dress while waiting in the ER.) This spring, four of Malatesta’s friends will wear the same dress to their proms. They’ll become, as Malatesta’s mother dubbed them, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Prom Dress.”

Everything from the details of when she first talked about the dress to the moniker that the group has taken on (which of course mirrors that of the book series The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants) is incredibly sweet. Since the dress doesn’t fit each girl perfectly – not all clothing can be magical – they are having it tailored to each person from week to week in between the dances. Only one girl has yet to wear it with three more to go, but it will surely look stunning on all of the girls and serve as a fabulous tribute to a deceased friend.
