Would You Pay $100 For This Donut?

Japan can keep their gold-plated Kit Kats. Because here in America, we’ve officially outdone them. And in the form of — what else? — donuts.

We’ve got Chef Björn Delacruz, of NYC’s Manila Social Club, to thank for the donuts — which are not only hand-coated in flakes of gold leaf small enough to catch the light, but also filled with purple ube mousse and Cristal jelly.

Woke up in NYC.. And apparently they get breakfast {champagne and gold doughnut for one, please} ✨? #talesofhereats

“I was drinking some champagne and eating one of our regular ube donuts, and I thought to myself, ‘This goes very well together,’” he explains in the video above. Why ube? The purple yam is from the Philippines, where Delacruz was born. Its earthy taste apparently goes well with the honey notes in Cristal.

“The concept for the donut was a pastry to celebrate the new year,” Delacruz says. He initially offered it just to his friends, family, and best customers. But it’s since taken off — he’s received requests for donuts from all around the world.

Unfortunately, the donuts — which are also sold by the dozen for a cool $1,000 —  aren’t available for shipping yet. Which means that some customers have actually flown into New York solely for donuts. Why? Because people are weird and some weird people have a lot of money.

Social media seems to be reacting well to Delacruz’s sparkly pastry, with multiple Instagrammers capturing the special occasion of their spending a day’s worth of income on a single donut.

A $100 Golden Cristal Ube Donut for @danielsum's 31st? Expect nothing less, people. Happy Birthday BFFFFFF!

What do you think? Are the bragging rights worth having gold flakes stuck in your teeth all day?
