McDonald’s Longs For Your Health-Conscious Approval, So They’re Testing Turkey Sausage And Egg Whites

If they can’t woo you with beer or kale salad, then how about egg whites, turkey sausage, and Greek yogurt? McDonald’s restaurants in San Diego County are doing just that, with a new line of breakfast bowls and a Simple Delights menu offering obvious appeal to California’s health-conscious fast foodies.

“These new menu items follow big changes McDonald’s has made to give customers more options—including All Day Breakfast, table service in our dining rooms, and the customizable Chef Crafted menu,” Bob Sutherland, president of San Diego County McDonald’s Owner/Operator’s Association said regarding the additions. “We are focusing on customers’ desires and are committed to making noticeable changes to the Golden Arches.”

Insert Mitch Hedberg’s joke about being a McDonald’s franchisee here.

In all seriousness, the Egg White & Turkey Sausage bowl features “breakfast turkey sausage, egg whites, sautéed baby spinach and kale, topped with thin shavings of Parmesan cheese and a freshly prepared bruschetta” and contains just 250 calories and 27 grams of protein. So, it seems like the right direction for the market McDonald’s is chasing! There’s also a breakfast bowl for the non-health-nutters: the Scrambled Egg & Chorizo Bowl. It’s got “crispy hash browns, fluffy scrambled eggs mixed with savory chorizo, topped with shredded cheddar and jack cheese with freshly prepared pico de gallo and spicy roasted salsa roja on the side.”

As for the Greek yogurt bit, the San Diego County McDonalds’ Fruit ‘N Yogurt Parfaits and McCafé Smoothies are now being made with Chobani Non-Fat Vanilla Greek yogurt. Part of a new Simple Delights menu aimed at “providing balanced options customers can feel good about,” the parfaits and smoothies are available all day long.

It’s tough to say whether health food lovers will actually try McDonald’s, even with these changes. As for us, we’re still campaigning for the McGriddle’s spot on the All-Day Breakfast menu. Healthfulness be damned.
