This New Zealand Fisherman Hooked A Shark And Then Freaked The Hell Out

This Christmas Eve, fishermen Elliot Gordon and Paul Adlington took their boat into New Zealand’s Tauranga Harbor to do a little holiday snapper fishing. And that’s exactly what they were doing, these festive fishing bros (who I’m now picturing in Santa hats and on a boat adorned with tinsel and Christmas lights), until something else grabbed their line: a 10-foot bronze whaler shark. The New Zealand Herald has the story.

[T]hings were going brilliantly, with the fish ferociously going for their bait in Tauranga Harbour.

“Suddenly they went off the bite and it just went quiet,” he told the Herald on Sunday.

Then something huge took his mackerel head bait and the line started tearing off his reel.

“You can hear it on the video — it was just screaming out line, it was just going for it,” he said.

“I instantly thought ‘I’ve definitely hooked a shark.’ “

And how does one react when one instantly thinks “I’ve definitely hooked a shark”? Well, by screaming and cussing, obviously, as this transcript of the video illustrates:

“Ohhh my God.”

“OHHHHH SH*T.”

“Ha-ha. WHOA-ha.”

“Ohhhh my God, he’s coming toward the boat!”

“F*ck off!”

“F*ck off! LOOK AT THA-AHHHH!”

[heavy breathing]

“OHHHH AHHHHHHH!”

Seems like a reasonable enough response to me.
