An Olympic Race Walker Proposed To His Boyfriend On The Beach In Rio

Great Britain’s Tom Bosworth may not have had the chance to stand atop the podium and receive a medal for race walking, but he’s leaving Brazil with a different memory that will last forever. After he was done competing in the 2016 Olympics, Bosworth got down on one knee and proposed to his boyfriend Harry Dinely on one of Rio’s many picaresque beaches. Dinely said yes and posted a picture of the simple yet classy silver engagement band/wedding ring on Twitter later that day.

Bosworth has been publicly out since 2015, one of about 50 out athletes at these Olympic games. In a picture posted to Instagram Tom and Harry looked ecstatic to be together in Brazil. Of course, theirs wasn’t the first instance of an athlete either proposing to their significant other or being proposed to during the duration of the games. A Chinese diver was asked the big question while she was still on the podium (bold move by her boyfriend), an equestrian champion got asked for the second Olympics in a row after she won a gold medal (nothing like shaming someone to the alter!), and a rugby player got engaged right after one of her matches. It’s hard to argue with the romance and meaning that comes with popping the question at an event that is as rare and special as the Olympics.
