These ‘Brutal Cuts’ In YouTube Videos Are Bringing Awareness To A Hugely Important Issue

If someone becomes a famous YouTuber, it’s likely that they’ve mastered a rhythm, a flow to their voice that users like enough to watch them talk at a camera in their room. But some celebrity YouTube folk are willfully interrupting that flow to raise awareness of a very important issue. The vloggers are inserting “brutal cuts” into their clips to raise awareness of female genital mutilation in Kenya.

The cuts were the brainchild of ActionAid, a U.K. charity that works to fight global injustice and poverty. The campaign — which launched on July 28 — hopes to “disrupt the internet before Kenyan schools let out for summer break, a time known as ‘cutting season.'” The campaign hopes to raise awareness of the issues surrounding FGM and raise money for girls hoping to escape the practice.

The cut consists of a jarring and distorted cut before a Kenyan girl says “This cut might be irritating. But some cuts are life-destroying.” Watch it in action at around 4:26 below:

The charity created an online tool to let everyone insert cuts into their photos and videos.

“FGM is ruthless. It can cause severe bleeding and lasting health problems. When you look at the faces of young innocent girls who are helpless and are afraid of undergoing the cut – you feel very sad and angered,” said Action Aid Kenya Head Of Programmes Makena Mwobobia, in a statement.

According to ActionAid up to 140 million girls and women have undergone FGM in the world and nearly three million more are at risk of having to undergo mutilation every year.
