Ronda Rousey rose to fame so quickly that it’s easy to forget she was a regular struggling American just a scant few years ago. We’ve all heard tales about her post-Olympic poverty, tending bar and living out of the back of her 2005 Honda Accord. And now a clip from an upcoming documentary on her life called Through My Father’s Eyes shows you what came after: living in a filthy hellhole.

“People live here, apparently,” Ronda jokes in the documentary footage. “I don’t know how we haven’t come up with a new strain of cholera or something. I have a note to describe the personality of the kitchen right there: ‘I don’t know what our garbage disposal must think of us.'”

“They’re tearing this house down like right after we move out, so….” she continues. “As soon as we found out we were like, ‘Well, who gives a sh*t, they’re tearing down the house. So, we kinda all let it go full to hell. But it was already kinda hell-ish when I moved in, ya know? I didn’t make it like this!”

We first got a glimpse of Ronda Rousey’s house back in 2012 for a Showtime All Access show leading up to her first defense of the Strikeforce title. Back then, Ronda sounded pretty happy with her dump.

“I always hated being in those houses where you had to be perfect and the carpet had to be perfect and if you stained anything, then it was the end of the world,” she said at the time. “You know what, I don’t think my carpet being all one color without interruption has anything to do with my happiness.”

Sure, but this was more than just the carpet being a little discolored. Rousey’s pad at the time would give a punk flophouse a run for its money (or lack thereof). We’ll just leave you now with these screenshots of the squalor Ronda used to live in.

Yes, that is a couch stacked on top of another couch. No wonder Rousey and her mom don’t always get along.
