When it comes to hot names in the world of Hollywood screenwriting, one of the most wide-spread is Diablo Cody. Known for her complex but not always likable characters, one does have to wonder how she managed to land her new gig as the writer of Sony’s Barbie.

Sony Pictures has set Diablo Cody to write the next draft of Barbie, the live-action film based on Mattel’s top-selling fashion doll that the studio believes will anchor a global film franchise.

“Diablo’s unconventionality is just what Barbie needs,” [said producer Walter Parkes]. “It signals we’re going for a legitimately contemporary tone. We’re bringing her on because she had great ideas, but even more importantly, she truly loves Barbie.

Barbie is one of the many top priorities at the studio, along with a new iteration of Spider-Man with Marvel and a reboot of Men in Black — which is currently rumored to be a cross-over film with the Jump Street franchise. The report goes on to say the studio is looking to “get the tone right” in a similar fashion to the way Warner Bros. handled The Lego Movie.
