The ‘Flash Gordon’ Remake May Have Just Found Its Director

Remember the Flash Gordon reboot we reported on last year? Well, it may have just found its director. Matthew Vaughn is currently in talks with 20th Century Fox to helm the film. According to THR, the remake will be based on Alex Raymond’s classic comic strip and — with films like Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kick-Ass under his belt — Vaughn may be the right person for the job.

Vaughn, who’s always shown an affinity for geek-friendly material with his poppy comic book movies Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, became highly sought by numerous studios after Kingsman. The movie, based on a Mark Millar-written comic, was released in February and has grossed more than $392 million worldwide on a reported budget of $81 million.

The script for the project was written by Star Trek 3 scribes J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. The original Flash Gordon film from 1980 is renowned for its cheesiness and its Queen soundtrack, while the original comic strip was an influence for George Lucas, who paid homage to the character with Star Wars.
