Yesterday, we reported that Marvel was talking to Selma director Ava DuVernay about helming one of their upcoming movies, something she has publicly expressed interest in doing. Specifically, the rumor was that the two movies she was discussing were Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman, and Captain Marvel, a role that has yet to be cast. While it isn’t confirmed, Bleeding Cool is claiming that DuVernay’s movie will be the former.

Like I said, this is just a rumor, and it has not been confirmed by Marvel, so take it with a grain of salt.

However, it would be a pretty slick move by Marvel, considering how they’ve been actively seeking an African-American director for Black Panther and a woman director for Captain Marvel. If DuVernay is hired (and stays on, unlike Patty Jenkins on Thor: The Dark World), she would not only be the first woman to direct a Marvel movie, but also the first African-American. And that still leaves a woman open for Captain Marvel, so a second woman director could soon follow. That would definitely put Marvel ahead of DC’s game because that universe already sought out a woman to direct Wonder Woman. Michelle MacLaren, however, exited that in favor of — weirdly enough — Patty Jenkins.

Marvel has a very good chance to not let itself be outdone, and Ava DuVernay is a pretty qualified lady. If we can avoid the old “creative differences” chestnut and give her whatever she wants, cinematic history can be made, and it can be amazing.
