Ava DuVernay Was Reportedly Hired To Direct Marvel’s ‘Black Panther’ Movie [UPDATED]

Last month, it felt like we were all one step closer to Selma director Ava DuVernay directing “something” for Marvel Studios, and now the rumor is still running rampant that Ava DuVernay is directing Black Panther. It’s a huge deal, and would mark the first time a person of color is directing a Marvel movie, and, if everything goes according to plan, DuVernay will be the first woman to do so, as well. (Patty Jenkins would have been the first, but her involvement on Thor: The Dark World fell through.)

It’s such a huge vote of confidence in DuVernay’s vision as a director and the story about a “struggle between the powerful and the exploited with racial overtones,” as Vanity Fair points out. She’s definitely a name that’s outside the box of Marvel’s rather white boys’ club, so this is a movie everyone should look forward to on July 6, 2018.

Now, everyone will wonder: Will Beyonce be in it?

UPDATE: A previous version of this post said that Ava DuVernay was “officially” and not “reportedly” hired for this. This was an error. As pointed out by Bleeding Cool, the Twitter account above is just a fan site, not an account affiliated with Marvel Studios. So as of now, this is still just a wonderful, wonderful rumor that is not yet confirmed. Apologies for the mistake! It’s hard not to get excited about that.
