Mark Millar Thinks He Knows How ‘Old Man Logan’ Could Work Outside Of The MCU

When Hugh Jackman — who says that this third Wolverine movie will be his last as the character — more or less confirmed that Wolverine 3 will be based on the “Old Man Logan” story, fans got pretty excited. Of course, once they put on clean pants and went back and read the comics, they realized that, hey, there’s a lot of Marvel Cinematic Universe characters in this that Fox doesn’t have the rights to. What are they gonna do?

Well, IGN also wanted to know, so they asked Mark Millar, the writer of the “Old Man Logan” series. He’s also a creative consultant for Fox, which means he’s got a bit of insight in regards to how the studio plans to handle situations like this. According to Millar, swapping out MCU characters with characters that Fox has the rights to isn’t that big of a deal, really.

“The way I worked [the series] is I actually structured it as, I broke it down mechanically,” Millar told IGN, “I figured out going from this part of America to that part of America and what he would encounter along the way, and then I added in the adversities later.” As an example — Millar said that while in the series, Logan travels with a blind Hawkeye, the film could replace him with Cyclops who “could be blind by the fact that his ruby-quartz visor is broken and he has to keep his eyes closed the whole time.”

Millar added that keeping the story in the X-Men movie universe would be easier, as there are many fans of the series who aren’t necessarily fans of the comics themselves. However they do it, Wolverine 3 (or whatever they call it) is scheduled for release on March 3, 2017.
