Amber Heard (Zombieland, Drive Angry, The Danish Girl) is in talks to play Mera — love interest of Aquaman and future queen of Atlantis — in the Justice League movies and Aquaman. (No word on if her husband‘s snazzy hat will also have a role.) Variety and The Hollywood Reporter broke the news, with THR revealing Aquaman has two competing scripts in development. One is being penned by David Leslie Johnson, who was Aquaman director James Wan’s writer on The Conjuring 2. The other script is from Kurt Johnstad, who co-wrote 300 with Zack Snyder.

If Mera is indeed appearing in the first Justice League film, Warner and Snyder will have to cast her soon. It starts shooting in April for a release date of November 17, 2017. Mera has been part of the Aquaman comics since 1963. She has the power to control and solidify water. It was eventually revealed that she had been part of a group banished from Atlantis in a civil war and imprisoned in another dimension, until she escaped with intentions to kill Aquaman. She fell in love with him instead, because of course.

Amber Heard should be able to relate to a prison escapee like Mera, considering she’s facing an unlikely 10-year prison term in Australia for illegally importing Johnny Depp’s dogs. (What a time to be alive.) Anyway, we doubt she’ll ever face real prison time in Australia, but it would be great research for weird comic book prisons. We’ve heard all of the guards in Australian prisons are just giant f*ckall spiders. Just what we heard.
