Just In Time For ‘Back To The Future’ Day, Here’s The First Official (And Totally Fake) Hoverboard Commercial

The countdown to Back to the Future Day (October 21st, if you didn’t know) is in full swing. A few weeks ago, LEGO Dimensions was released and it finds Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd reuniting to reprise their iconic roles of Marty and Doc Brown in the video game. And now the 30th anniversary celebration of Robert Zemekis’ classic sci-fi comedy has also inspired a heartfelt new documentary — which is set to be released on the 21st — as well as the opportunity to stream the three films for free online.

Next week will also see a brand new Blu ray release to document the movie’s pearl anniversary which will include Doc Brown starring in a brand new short to mark the occasion. With that recent Jaws 19 trailer, it feels like Universal Pictures is pulling out all the stops to remind us that we are indeed living in the future. And even though the geniuses over at Lexus have created a real-life operational hoverboard, that hasn’t stopped the company from delivering unto the world the first official TV commercial for “the first-ever skateboard that’s always catching air.”

This is obviously a fake ad — you didn’t need me to tell you that, right? — much like the trailer for that non-existent shark movie sequel referenced above. Still, the retro feel of the spot does a good job at harkening back to those odd days of the late ’80s and early ’90s. Pepsi Perfect, anyone?
