Steve Guttenberg Is Very Flattered That Bill Clinton Mentioned ‘Police Academy’ At The DNC

It’s a good dang Friday when we get to check in with Steve Guttenberg. You probably won’t be surprised that the star of Lavalantula and its sequel, 2 Lava 2 Lantula! (seriously), will soon appear in SyFy’s Sharknado 4: The 4th Awakens, but it’s always great to see one of the most likable movie stars of the ‘80s still being one of the most charming guys on the planet. Amazingly, we have Bill Clinton to thank for Guttenberg being back in the news today, but unfortunately not because they’re starring alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the reboot of Three Men and a Baby. (Give it time, though.)

Instead, it’s because during Clinton’s very heartfelt, personal speech at the DNC in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, the husband of the Democratic nominee for President of the United States recalled once watching a marathon of the franchise that made Guttenberg a comedy star. Specifically…

We rarely disagreed on parenting, although she did believe that I had gone a little over the top when I took a couple of days off with Chelsea to watch all six Police Academy movies back to back.

That’s always good to know, that the leader of the free world once took a few days off to watch the Police Academy franchise through City Under Siege (poor Mission to Moscow, never gets the credit it deserves). But that’s hardly the worst revelation from Clinton’s presidency, which is actually what led to this movie marathon, according to Guttenberg.

“It was a fun, meaningful story about the fun side of parenting. But I actually saw him a few years ago, and another reason that story rang so true is that he was telling the truth… We were talking, and he was saying he was having a couple of days that were challenging,” Guttenberg told Deadline. “And I knew what it was about at the time, it was in the papers. And he told me ‘I gotta tell you, I sat down with Chelsea and I watched all six Police Academy movies.’”

“It was such a delightful surprise to me,” Guttenberg continued, “but I couldn’t help but think to myself, ‘you’ve got the most important job on the planet, and you’re taking time out to watch Police Academy?” But years later I’ve come to understand it’s very important when you’re driving at 100 miles an hour to pull over and refuel and oil up the gears. It really moved me to know that with such an important job, he still was mindful of how important that it. I think that’s a requisite quality in a great person.” (Via Deadline)

In case you’re wondering where this ranks in terms of actors acknowledging presidents as fans of their work, I’m going to put it at No. 2, very far behind the reigning and eternal champion, Alexandra Daddario.
