The ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Directors Want A Black Widow Solo Movie

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been making the rounds to promote Captain America: Civil War, which brought them to a long interview televised in China. About seven minutes into the video, the interviewer asks about the possibility of a Black Widow standalone movie. Joe answered first: “Oh yeah, we love that character.” He follows up with:

“We find that the character is one of the richest, if not the richest, character in the Marvel universe. She’s a very complex character. She’s haunted by demons and her understanding of the world is fascinating. I think there is a lot that can be done with that character.” (transcribed by Comics Alliance)

So, it seems Joe and Anthony Russo think there’s more to explore with Black Widow. If only they could do something about that…

Considering the Russo brothers are directing both parts of Avengers: Infinity War, they would know about the likelihood of spin-off movies more than almost anyone. But we’re not really expecting a Black Widow movie to happen. Two years ago, Kevin Feige said Marvel had done some development on a standalone Black Widow film, and we also know Scarlett Johansson discussed it with them and a treatment was written by Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Nicole Perlman, but nothing new seems to have come from that. And Black Widow doesn’t even get included in toys based directly on her most memorable scenes. So, yeah. The only place we’re expecting to hear about a Black Widow movie at this point is on SNL, but we’ll still fight anyone who tells us we can’t daydream about what could be.
