The Russo Brothers Reveal Details About The Opening Scene Of ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Recent rumors about how Captain America: Civil War would begin and end tell a different story, but directors Joe and Anthony Russo recently shed some light on the opening scenes of their sequel to 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The brotherly filmmakers are scheduled to appear at Wizard World New Orleans over the weekend, and ComicBook.com was able to chat with the directors about their second Marvel movie.

The Russos were initially asked how much time has passed between Winter Soldier and Civil War, but their answer led to a discussion of where the titular character and his Avenger friends find themselves at the sequel’s beginning.

“We find Cap leading the Avengers. He’s tutoring or mentoring Scarlet Witch in the beginning of the movie and bringing her into the fold. We find them on a mission at the start of the film.”

The admission at Civil War begins with Captain America (Chris Evans) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) on a mission together goes counter to a previous rumor that suggested something very different. Specifically, this popular rumor claims Civil War opens with the funeral of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Rogers’ World War II-era flame.

Of course, Carter’s funeral could still happen at the opening of the film. Yet the Russos explicitly stating that Captain America and Scarlet Witch are “on a mission at the start of the film” implies that the former won’t be the first scene viewers are treated to.

Either way, audiences won’t know for sure until Captain America: Civil War opens on Friday, May 6.
