‘It’s All About Timing’: Drew Goddard Explains Why He Isn’t Directing ‘Spider-Man’ For Marvel

Considering his brilliant creative history with the former grand poobah of Marvel Joss Whedon (Cabin in the Woods, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and his work on Netflix’s Daredevil series, Drew Goddard seemed like an obvious choice to direct the newest take on Spider-Man after it had finally been reclaimed from Sony (partially). But when Cop Car director Jon Watts was hired for the job, a lot of people were asking not just “Who?” but “Why not Drew Goddard?” Well, it all came down to timing, and it just wasn’t working.

Goddard, who is currently promoting Ridley Scott’s The Martian (for which he wrote the screenplay) at the Toronto International Film Festival, opened up about what happened between him and the Marvel bosses and how Spider-Man could have happened, but just didn’t:

…I think, with Spider-Man, I didn’t really have an idea. Part of that might have just been because I had just written one. I spent a year working on Sinister Six, and I think I was like in a head space where I just didn’t… you know, it’s very hard to say, ‘Ok, now write a new movie.’ So, it never got that far. We never, it never got taken that far. They know how much respect I have for them. They’ve been very nice to me over the years, and I know sooner or later, we’re going to find the right project. It’s all about timing.

So, the great news is that there is no bad blood between Goddard, there was just the Sinister Six, which was also the reason why Goddard wasn’t the showrunner on Daredevil and limited his role to that of a consultant. But if Goddard is still on great terms with Marvel, who clearly trusts him with properties both new and established, then it’s just a matter of time before the planets align and the perfect project arrives.
