Elizabeth Banks Is Unrecognizable As Rita Repulsa

When we heard Elizabeth Banks was taking the job of main villain Rita Repulsa in Lionsgate’s Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers big-screen adaptation, we had to wonder what was in it for her. It turns out the answer was “a complete and total transformation.”

First revealed by People Magazine, if you click through to the full look, it’s a pretty hard swerve from both Banks’ look and the Power Rangers of the ’90s. For contrast, here’s Rita Repulsa from the original show:

You can’t blame them for getting rid of the hair horns and unflattering tunic, but the heavy armor, Star Trek-esque head ridges, and the fact that reboot Rita seems to need a bath are all new ideas. Banks notes to People that she’s never played a villain before, and she also states that there’s a reason for the new look, which is intimately tied to the origin of the Power Rangers.

Banks has cheerfully subverted her all-American blonde looks in the past, whether she’s playing hard-nosed Avery Jessup on 30 Rock or the bride of a disgusting slug monster in Slither. Still, this isn’t quite the change we were expecting, and now we’re incredibly curious as to just how it came to be. We’ll find out March 24, 2017, when the movie arrives.
